Walls & Floors

When it comes to walls you can easily paint them a simple colour that you like but for real pizzazz why not consider some vintage wallpaper designs. Depending on the look you’re going for, vintage wallpaper designs really start the look of a room and give you something to work with. Wallpaper is also a lot easier than having to line the room in protective plastic to paint it. As far as flooring goes the most popular choice for vintage flooring is probably vinyl flooring that comes in a checkerboard pattern. Now you shouldn’t do your whole home with this but the bathroom or kitchen would look great.

Lighting & Fixtures

After the floors and walls comes the lighting which really brings the whole room together and sets the mood. You should do a little research of what lighting fixtures were popular within the time period you want. You should check all the different styles and mix them throughout your home according to the room. If you can’t find original lighting fixtures from that time then just try to stick to designs that are as close as possible.

Tables & Dressers

Furniture such as dining tables and dressers were always pretty simple unless the person was quite wealthy. The best way to make sure that your home matches is by sticking to simple wooden pieces. You can easily paint wood different colours and classic pieces will always look great no matter where you put them. Simple wooden pieces don’t draw a lot of focus and will allow you to decorate the rest of the room.

Sofa & Chairs

Sofas, couches, and living room chairs were always the focus of the living room so you want to opt for something vintage, outrageous, and colourful. When decorating your living room you should always start with the couch and pick pieces out that compliment it. Don’t shy away from colour and choose something you really love. Chairs don’t have to match, but do have to compliment the couch and the rest of the room.

Vanity

A vanity unit in a bedroom will add instant glam and transport you to the glamorous decade. This is something that most women probably want so why not go vintage for a really luxurious vibe. Don’t forget to decorate it with some vintage inspired toppers like a spray perfume bottle, maybe a giant powder puff, and some pearls.

Appliances

Now if you really want to change everything choose kitchen appliances and bathroom fittings that look retro and vintage. Now you shouldn’t buy an appliance that was made all the way back when because it probably won’t be as good as the appliances today. You should stick to choosing appliances that look vintage on the outside but still come with a five-star rating.

Linens & Trinkets

Choose bedding, pillow cases, table cloths, and anything else with retro patterns. The same goes for trinkets and finishing touches. Now depending on the era and look you’re going for you should try sticking to things that really bring out the look and feel of the decades you love. Finishing touches really do make all the difference so look for pictures, artwork, and accessories that look like they fit right into your decade.
